About Sleep Cycle Calculator

A sleep cycle calculator that works out when to go to bed or when to set the alarm. Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and waking at the end of a cycle usually feels far better than waking in the middle of one, even on the same total hours.

Tell it when you need to wake up and it suggests bedtimes that line up with whole cycles. Tell it when you are going to bed, or that you are going to bed now, and it suggests wake-up times instead. It allows for the time you take to fall asleep, which you can adjust.

The suggestions assume a typical 90-minute cycle. Everyone is a little different, so treat them as a good starting point rather than a prescription.

How to use it

  1. Choose a mode: wake at a set time, bed at a set time, or going to bed now.
  2. Enter the time, and adjust how long you usually take to fall asleep.
  3. Pick one of the suggested times. Four to six full cycles (six to nine hours) suit most people.

Questions

How long is a sleep cycle?

About 90 minutes on average, moving through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. The calculator uses 90 minutes, plus the time you take to fall asleep.

How many sleep cycles do I need?

Most adults feel best after four to six full cycles, which is six to nine hours of sleep. Five cycles, seven and a half hours, is a common sweet spot.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a simple calculator based on average sleep cycle length. If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, talk to a doctor.
