About How Long Ago was That?

A date difference calculator that answers one question properly: how long ago was that, or how long until it? Choose a date and time and it shows the gap from right now in years, days, hours, minutes and seconds, ticking as you watch.

It works in both directions. A date in the past gives you "ago", a date in the future gives you "until", so it doubles as a quick time-until calculator for deadlines, birthdays and anniversaries.

Everything is calculated in your browser from your device's clock, in your own time zone.

How to use it

  1. Pick a date and time with the date picker.
  2. Read the plain-English answer, such as "3 years, 2 months ago".
  3. Check the totals underneath: the same gap in seconds, minutes, hours, days and years.

Questions

How is the time difference calculated?

As the exact number of seconds between the moment you picked and now, in your time zone, then expressed in years, days, hours and minutes. The totals are whole units of each, so 90 days shows as 90 days and about 0.25 years.

Can I calculate the time until a future date?

Yes. Pick a date in the future and the result switches from "ago" to "until". For a countdown you can share with other people, use the Countdown Maker.

Does it account for leap years and daylight saving?

Yes. The difference is worked out from real timestamps, so leap days and clock changes are included automatically.
